The Exchange Club of Madison is pleased to present all our 2011 Youth of the Month winners with an award plaque and a check for $200. This year's essay theme is "Inspired by the Power of Community Service". Awards are presented by Youth of the Month committee chairman, David Bell.
January 2011 - Jacob Gordon with parents Michael and Carol
Jacob is vice-president of the Rotary sponsored "Interact Club", Editor in chief of the "Hand Print" DHHS newspaper, participates in Relay for Life, Peer Advocates, Rugby Club, Diversity Club, and has been a part of mission trips to both the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. He received the Harvard Book Prize and is a National Merit Commended Scholar; his future plans are to study engineering at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri
February 2011 - Caroline Eisele with parents Michael and Jennifer
Caroline's activities include being a member of the National Honor Society, DHHS Band, Peer Advocates, Uganda Club, Diversity Club, Class Council, DHHS Girls Ice Hockey and Softball Teams, Student Leadership Team, New York/Upper Connecticut Pony Club, and Regional Youth Board. In addition, she has received the CT Association of Superintendents Award, Smith College Book Award and attended the American Legion Laurel Girls State. Caroline has been accepted at UConn and University of Vermont while waiting to hear from Dartmouth, Williams, Boston College, and Yale.
March 2011 - Andrew Chapman with parents David and Karen
Amongst his many activities, Andrew is a member of the National Honor Society, National Merit Semifinalist, Class Council, Student Council President, Student Leadership Team, Math Team, Rotary Interact Club, DHHS Band, Soccer and Track Teams, Shoreline Youth Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Band, Board of Education Student Representative, attended Connecticut Boys State where he was elected to the Senate and position of Lt. Governor. In addition, Andrew is an Eagle Scout and active in a Church Group doing Mission work in New Haven, Gulfport MS, and New Orleans LA. Upon graduation from Daniel Hand, Andrew will further his education at Columbia University in New York City.
April 2011 - Meghan O'Sullivan with parents Richard and Cynthia
Meghan is a member of the National Honor Society Class Council, DHHS Marching Band in which she has been a squad and section leader, Peer Advocates, Environmental Club, Uganda Club, Aids Awareness Club, and Cross Country and Track teams. She has been very active with the First Congregational Church Youth Group included H.O.M.E, and has taken Mission trips to the Dominican Republic. Meghan plans to continue her education at either UConn or Hamilton College.
May 2011 - Joy Kimmel with parents Rachel and Brian
Joy is a member of the National Honor Society, the Debate team,Captain of the Volleyball team member of the Acts of Kindness club, where she organized the first " Four Quarters Campaign" for charity. Joy has received awards for Excellence in Technolgy Education and Art and she will continue her education at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. recently received the CIAC Scholar athlete award for DHHS. She will continue her
education at Vanderbilt University where she will pursue her interest in medical

2011 Youth Awards dinner at Cafe Allegre
The A.C.E. Award (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) is given to a senior student who has had to overcome great physical, emotional or social obstacles and have qualified for graduation. The award recognizes those students who are often overlooked for their accomplishments. This recognition serves as a powerful example to all students that hard work and perseverance really do pay. The ACE Award winner may be submitted to the district competition. Winners at the district level have an opportunity to compete for the National ACE Award.
In June, the Madison Exchange Club awarded Ryan Stufano as the 2011 ACE Awardee and presented Ryan with a check for $500 at dinner with his sister Kate, parents Kris and Jim, grandmother Lynn Stada, program manger Graham Adams and guidance counselor Phyllis Annunziata.
Ryan’s educational experience has been impacted by the need to cope with and adapt to having a learning disability. Ryan is described as conscientious, motivated, determined, caring and mature. He is an avid sailor and has worked as a sailing instructor for the Town of Madison. Ryan also has participated in the Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track programs at DHHS. Ryan’s experiences as a learner and athlete have helped him to develop into the strong and caring person that he is today. Ryan will attend UConn at Avery Point in the fall.

Named after a former Madison Exchange member with a special needs child, the Wally Cataldo Award is given annually to a student who has excelled in the special education program at DHHS and will pursue higher education after graduation.
The Madison Exchange Club announced
Alyssa Burlakoff as the 2011 Wally Cataldo Award winner at the June 1st dinner meeting with her parents Sandi and Ron, her program manager, Travis Winkley as invited guests. Pam McKinnon presented Alyssa her award and a check for $500 in recognition of her hard work and dedication.
Alyssa has worked incredibly hard in pursuit of academic achievement throughout her years at DHHS. In addition, she was a four year member of the dance team, and co-captain for her senior year. Her magnetic personality, compassion and desire for success, are truly inspiring to all who know her. Alyssa will be attending Newbury College in Brookline, Massachusetts this fall.
